The letter is in the form of a travel diary, commenting on his trip East from San Francisco via Nicaragua aboard the Cortes. It begins with recollections of San Francisco and describes the passengers and their exploits. He notes a Mormon enroute to Washington with a Utah statehood petition, a bishop and a drunken cleric, a party of Germans, the suicide of a San Francisco banker, a visit to Lake Nicaragua and a description of Nicaraguan soldiers, and gives a lengthy account of his suspicion of being impersonated by a notorious outlaw named "Lemon." He makes passing reference to Hinton Rowan Helper (his bunkmate), William Alexander Duer, Thomas Turner Fauntleroy of Virginia, and alludes to John Charles Fremont and Thomas Hart Benton.
